Ambrosia is a cultivar of apple originating in British Columbia in the early 1990s. The original tree was first cultivated by the Mennell family of Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, who discovered it growing in their orchard.

Braeburn was found as a chance seedling in 1952 by a farmer in New Zealand and was first commercially grown at the Braeburn Orchard near Motueka where the fruit derives its name from. Ideal for cooking, the Braeburn apple is available from October through April in the northern hemisphere and comes in large to medium sizes offering a sweet and tart taste to its devourer.

Fuji apples were developed in the late 1930s by growers at the Tohoku Research Station in Fujisaki, Japan. Fuji apples are a cross between two classic American apple varieties – Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Janet. Fuji apples were introduced to the United States in the 1960s. Since then, the apple has grown into one of today’s most popular varieties. Fans of sweet apples adore it because with Brix, or sugar levels, of 15-18, it is the sweetest apple around! Fuji apples are also great storing apples, and because of that, are available year-round.

Originating in New Zealand, Royal Gala apples have a bold, red striped appearance over a creamy yellow background. They are crisp, with a subtle, sweet taste and firm flesh.

The breed of apple born in the US at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Jonagold, is a result of fusion between Golden Delicious and Jonathan family of apples; a large fruit with a finely thin skin, Jonagold is famous for its appetizing smell, juiciness and sweet and sour taste.

Honeycrisp is a near-perfect raw apple. It is fantastically crisp, thanks to larger individual cells within its flesh, and it boasts a delicate sweet-tart balance and a light berry flavour.

Pacific Queen is darker red in colour, has a higher sugar level and ripens earlier than Pacific Rose, but is similar in taste, providing a sweet, crisp inner flesh.

New Zealand developed the Pacific Rose apple – a crisp, sweet desert apple. Pretty and sweet, its red skin surrenders crisply to cream-colored flesh. One of the larger apples, the Rose has descendants from the East Indies and is kin to the Gala Apple.

The flesh, depending on the variety, can be firm, pale yellow to cream-colored, juicy, crunchy, or crisp. Apples range in flavours from sweet to tart and can be aromatic or mild in scent.

The Red Delicious apple variety was discovered in 1875 as a chance seedling growing on Jesse Hiatt’s farm in Peru, Iowa. Thinking it was a nuisance, Hiatt tried to chop down the seedling, but the tree grew back repeatedly. On the third time, Hiatt allowed it to grow and produce apples.

In 1893, Hiatt took his apple, called Hawkeye, to a fruit show in Missouri. Following the show, Stark Brothers Nursery purchased the rights to market the apple and renamed it Red Delicious. Today, the classic coke-bottle shape and colour of Red Delicious makes it one of the most well-known apple varieties in the United States.

Red Jonaprince is a mutation of Jonagold having a bright to dark red colored, non-greasy and very early ripening apple. The fruit flesh is firmer and has a little more sugar and is a little sourer than that of Jonagold.

Primo is an exclusive bright red apple variety. Primo apples have a fresh sweet and sour taste and are extremely crunchy. The pulp is very juicy and has an irresistible aroma. Primo apples have an extremely good shelf life.

Sugar Bee apples look similar to their Honeycrisp parent. The relatively thin and glossy skin is yellow-green in colour overlaid with a red blush tinged with orange. Some fruits are up to 100 percent red colouring. Large tan lenticels cover the skin. The conical tapered shape is also very similar to a Honeycrisp. The flesh is creamy white inside and the texture is coarse, juicy, and consistently crispy. Sugar Bees are very sweet and aromatic, with some richness and floral quality in flavour under the sugar.

Colour of the skin is blush red and the texture is smooth. Flesh of the red delicious apple is greenish white and grained, sweet and juicy. Its crispiness and aromatic features made it more attractive.

The best known varieties are the ‘Hass’ avocado, which is known for having a hard, rough skin, which, when ripe, softens up and turns dark in colour.

The Fuerte avocado is often recognized as the archetypal avocado, green in colour, pear-like in shape, and ranging from six to twelve ounces in size. It has smooth, medium-thin skin that peels easily, with dense, pale green flesh.

Gwen avocados look similar to the Hass variety, but are slightly larger. They are oval and plump with thick green skins that have a pebbled texture and turn dull green when the fruit is fully ripe. They have creamy gold-green flesh around a small to medium seed.

Autumn Royal is a late-season black grape. It has large, elongated purple-black berries with a crunchy skin, firm texture and a pleasant level of sweetness. It is generally seedless with attractive, translucent yellow-green flesh.

It is a hybrid of Thompson Seedless, Cardinal, and several other Vitis vinifera cultivars. It produces large clusters of medium-large red grapes with a sweet flavour. The Forelle pear is possibly the oldest variety of pear and said to have originated in the 1600’s in Germany. The ‘Forelle’ meaning ‘trout’ in Germany derives its name from its uniquely red lenticels and colours of a Rainbow trout. The Forelle pear is small sized, sweet in taste and is considered to be a treasure among the pear connoisseurs.

Packham Pears are originally bred in Australia, and is great eaten fresh or used in cooking. They are slow- ripening variety of pears with green skin that becomes light yellow when ripe.

Santa Maria pears are large, uniform fruits, averaging 4 to 6 centimetres in diameter and 6 to 8 centimetres in length, and have an elongated, oval to pyriform shape. The skin is smooth, thin, covered in prominent lenticels, and has a yellow-green base with pink blush on the sides with the most sun exposure.
